White Nectarines are So Delicious!

White nectarines are my absolute favorite summer fruit.  The first time I bought them, I was literally walking through the produce section and I caught a whiff of their sweet summer scent.  I played it safe and just got a couple of them. Ever since the first time I brought them home, I look forward every summer to when they arrive.  Usually, my nose notices them before I do!

When Can You Get White Nectarines?

They are typically available in late spring, and start hitting the produce bins right away.  Nectarines do not have fur like peaches, which is nice because you don’t have to peel it.  The white nectarines specifically have a lighter flavor than yellow nectarines.  They are super sweet and super juicy.  Eating them like an apple is my favorite way to enjoy them, but since they are so juicy, they can be a bit messy.  Most of the time, I cut the nectarine in half, remove the pit, and slice it as pictured in these photos.

How to Tell if it is Ripe

To find a perfectly ripe nectarine, I first smell the fruit and lightly squeeze to make sure it is soft.  If it still needs to ripen, I leave it out a day or two to finish ripening.  You can also place them in a brown paper bag to speed up the ripening process.  The ripe ones I bring home go right into the crisper drawer of my fridge.  The one exception is the first one I eat as soon as I have gotten into the kitchen and washed it.  I am usually enjoying a nice, juicy and messy ripe one while attempting to put away my groceries.  My grandchildren also enjoy eating them – I always tell them how special the white nectarines are – at least to me!

Hurry and Try One Today!

Go to your local market and get some white nectarines, you will be glad you did.  But hurry, white nectarines won’t be around much longer;  they are usually available June – August.

Enjoy!
