Acme Oyster House delivered on its promise of delicious oysters and creole cuisine.
Want to Get the Inside Scoop?
We have found that the best way to get to know a city is to sit at the bar and chat with the bartender. I failed to remember the name of our bartender, a very nice lady who has worked there for over 25 years. She was also highly impacted by Hurricane Katrina and shared some of the experiences she had during that difficult time.
Nearly 100 Years in The Iberville Location
The original location was on Royal Street, and opened in 1910 as the Acme Cafe. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the building. Thus, it was renamed “Acme Oyster House” and moved to its current location on Iberville Street in 1924
Although we had intended to go our first night, there was a long….. long… line waiting to get into the restaurant. So, we decided to wait until the next day when we could get there for an early lunch.
Jackpot!
We were one of the first in the door, and grabbed a seat at the bar. Bloody Mary’s were the first order of business, and they were delicious. Served with a pickled green bean and spiced just right. Well, mine was perfect, but Todd added a little more spice to his.
To Grill or Not to Grill, That is the Question
Next up was an order of the famous char-grilled oysters. It is such a different flavor having them grilled versus fresh. I found them to be delicious, but Todd said he preferred the raw oysters. Either way, in New Orleans, char-grilled oysters are a must try!
We then moved on to our lunch entrees; Todd’s was the jambalaya and mine was the Roast Beef Po-Boy “Debris Style”. I omitted the bread, so it looks a lot different than it normally would. Either way, the flavors were good, and the ambiance delightful.
If Only the Walls Could Talk….
The building itself is long and narrow, with a large room in the back with family style seating. The historical pictures and history of those who had been there before were incredible. Can you imagine how many people have come and gone from that building in almost 100 years?
If you get a chance to go there, I highly recommend sitting at the bar and enjoying the food, ambiance and conversation.
Enjoy ,
