Perfect Rice, Every Time

Instant rice was always my main go to when making any dish that required rice. In fact, if I didn’t use instant rice, my husband would panic. He worried that the rice would not be cooked properly; too crunchy (undercooked) or too starchy (overcooked).

Serving a Large Crowd – So Easy

Several years ago, I was hosting about 15 people for dinner. The dinner was “simple”, so I thought, brisket tacos, my signature Mexican style black beans, roasted and sliced poblano peppers, and cilantro lime rice.

Fortunately, I decided to explore the possibility of baking the rice in the oven. And, the good news is; it is so easy! No stirring, no worrying, just perfectly cooked rice every time!

No Watching, No Stirring, No Worrying

How is this possible, you might ask. Well, it is quite a simple process, which takes about 30 minutes all together. And, as usual, I am using my counter top Cuisinart Toaster Oven.

The easiest part of this is that you follow the same directions on the package. Only the style of cooking changes.

Always Get the Ingredients Ready First

The first thing I do is get my ingredients together and have them ready to go. Getting the pan prepared for the rice ahead of time is key, as well. Typically, I use an 8 x 8 square brownie pan. However, I have used a glass pie pan; either one is fine. Have aluminum foil ready to cover the rice for the actual baking process.

Next, get a small sauce pan and measure out the liquid ingredients. Mahatma Rice is the brand I use. It is an extra long grain rice, which makes it nice and fluffy. I have tried short grain rice, but it seemed mushy to me. It could’ve been the chef, just saying.

Add Your Favorite Seasoning and Broth

The directions on the package call for water, however, I always use chicken or beef broth. It adds that extra depth of flavor I look for in my rice. Additionally, I season it before cooking with Montreal Chicken Seasoning. The combination of the broth and seasoning tends to compliment most of the rice dishes I make.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Measure and pour the rice into the brownie or pie pan. Then, add the broth, seasoning and pepper to the sauce pan and bring to a slight boil. Once it is lightly boiling, pour the broth over the rice. Cover the rice with the aluminum foil and place this into the toaster or regular oven.

The Oven Does all the Work for You

Set a timer for 23-25 minutes. Once the timer goes off, keep the rice in the oven until ready to serve. Uncover and fluff the rice with a fork.

Enjoy!
