Death by chocolate is a recipe I got from my friend, Sue, when we lived in Steven’s Point, Wisconsin. It was her “go to” recipe anytime we had a potluck at work. And, it was the most requested recipe as well as the first dish emptied in the first few minutes. I always think of Sue when I make this recipe and it makes me smile.
Easy Peasy
With all that said, the actual recipe is actually a breeze to put together. There are three items that go into making this delightful, gooey dessert. And, most of them are so easy to make or buy. Preparing this the day before your event is best, but not required.
Getting Ready
First, I take two tubs of whipped cream out of the freezer and sit them on the counter to thaw out. Don’t worry; they won’t be out too long before I put them back in the fridge assembled into the dessert!
Next, get together the ingredients to make my Grandma Goff’s brownies; you can find that recipe here. Mix and bake the brownies, letting them cool for a few minutes. (If you need a shortcut here, buy prebaked brownies from the grocery store.)
Mix the Pudding
Start getting the pudding mixed together. The original recipe called for two packages of chocolate pudding, but I found it to be a little too chocolaty. (I know, I know, how can that be?) As a result, I mix a package of vanilla and chocolate together and added in four cups of milk. Use a wire whisk to make sure you get it mixed well. The pudding sets up pretty quickly, so be prepared to start on the next step right away.
Layer, Layer, Layer…
Take your bowl or trifle bowl and start by layering the crumbled brownies; pudding; and whipped cream. It really doesn’t matter if your layers are solid; just make sure to have the layers in that order. The pudding and whipped cream help to soften the brownies.
Layer 1 – Crumbled Brownies: Layer 2 – Pudding: Layer 3 – Whipped Cream.
As you can see, my whipped cream was still a little frozen in the picture below. It still came out wonderfully.
Continue to layer until you are out of ingredients.
Place this in the refrigerator overnight, so it will be completely ready. That is unless you want to have it the same day, wait just a few hours for it to work its magic.
Serve it up!
Be ready for extreme happiness when you take a bite of this delicious dessert!
Enjoy!
