Feather pillow, a magical pillow, and very special to me, because I absolutely can’t live without mine! What’s not to love? They are so fluffy, soft and pokey…. Wait, what? Pokey? Yes, the feathers are soft but the quills are pokey.
Ouch – Stop Poking Me!
How do you enjoy your pillow when it keeps sticking into your head, side, face or back? After an unsuccessful search for pillow covers to prevent this, I came up with my own solution for this sticky problem. A simple, inexpensive and quick fix and no more discomfort. Ahhhhh.
Feather Pillow Protection Fabric
Okay, that’s not what it is really called it’s my new favorite fabric, Blackout Curtain Material. I buy mine at JoAnne’s Fabrics, and they have a great supply. The fabric ranges from light to heavy, and there are several colors to choose from. Since my pillows had really sharp quills, I went with a really thick heavy blackout material. The fabric I bought was about $7.99 a yard, and I got two yards, mainly because I also needed it for something else. But with JoAnne’s 40% off coupon, I got it for $9.58 plus tax out the door. Not too shabby considering there is nothing in the stores that even compares to this. Believe me, I have been looking for a while.
How Did I Find this Dream Fabric?
I initially discovered this fabric because I was trying to find a way to make my Car’s Sun Visor work better. Since we live in Texas, anything to keep my car cooler is a worth trying. You can read Sun Visor Covers You Need to Make here. Using a heavier fabric is key to keeping this cover effective. What is especially nice is that by making the zippered cover smaller, slipping a decorative pillowcase over it is super easy.
Determine How Much Fabric You Need Before You Go
When I buy fabric, I tend to lose my mental math ability at the cutting table. Thus, I am going to try to help you determine how much fabric you need ahead of time. A standard pillow case measures 20” X 26” – for the zippered case, I make it an inch smaller, so the cut out size is 21” X 25”. If I am making two pillowcases, I will need four fabric squares measuring 21” X 25” each. That means you would need 42” X 50” for each pillowcase. Since the fabric is 54” and the fabric will be folded, I will need 42” or 1-1/3 yards for both pillows. A yard is 36” x the width of the fabric; in this case 36” X 54”. At 7.99 per yard, this would be approximately $10.39 X less a 40% coupon = $4.15 discount = Net of $6.24 for two pillow covers.
